Become a Plaice Pro: A Guide to Shore Fishing for Flatfish in North Wales

North Wales isn’t just about towering mountains and stunning coastlines; it’s also a paradise for anglers seeking thrilling fishing adventures. And when it comes to flatfish, the plaice reigns supreme! These delicious fish are a favorite among anglers, and with the right knowledge and techniques, you can increase your chances of landing a good catch on the shores of North Wales.

Understanding Plaice: Plaice prefer sandy or muddy bottoms in relatively shallow waters. They’re known for their distinctive diamond-shaped bodies and camouflage patterns that help them blend seamlessly into the seafloor.

Ideal Conditions: When planning your fishing trip, remember that plaice are more active during specific tides and weather conditions.

  • Tides: Rising or falling tides often bring in bait fish, attracting plaice to shallower waters.
  • Weather: Calm days with overcast skies are generally best for shore fishing as plaice tend to feed more actively when the water is relatively still.

Best Time of Year: Plaice can be caught throughout the year in North Wales, but they are most abundant during the spring and autumn months.

Hotspots for Plaice: While plaice can be found scattered throughout the Welsh coastline, certain locations stand out as hotspots:

Look for areas with clean sand, gentle slopes, and clear water – prime real estate for a lurking plaice. Remember to check tide charts and weather forecasts; calm days with rising tides often create prime fishing conditions

Tackle and Bait:

  • Rods: A medium-light spinning rod paired with a suitable reel is ideal for shore fishing for plaice.
  • Line: Use a monofilament line of around 10-18lb test strength.
  • Hooks: Size 1/0 to 2/0 hooks work well for catching plaice.
  • Bait:
    • Ragworm and Lugworm: These wriggly treats are absolute staples in a plaice angler’s arsenal. They’re readily available at local tackle shops throughout North Wales and are incredibly effective at enticing strikes.
    • Peeler Crab: Another popular bait choice, especially during the warmer months.

Technique:

  • Running ledger rig: This simple setup allows your bait to be presented naturally on the seafloor, mimicking the movement of natural prey.

Don’t Forget The Bling!: Plaice are curious creatures, drawn to movement and visual stimulation. Adding a “bling” element to your rig, such as beads or sequins near the bait, can significantly increase your chances of attracting a bite.

Safety First: Always remember to prioritize safety when fishing from the shore. Be aware of changing tides and potential hazards in the water.

With a little preparation, patience, and knowledge, you’ll be well on your way to experiencing the thrill of catching plaice from the shores of North Wales!
