Scratching for fish

Scratching for fish

Scratching for fish changing to small hooks and small baits to catch fish when the larger ones are not biting. Many anglers choose scratching rigs when the bigger fish are not on the feed, or when faced with a blank session. The best rig is a simple three hook paternoster or at distance with a 3 hook rig with bait clips.

This rig can normally have up to 3 or more hooks, this will create a bigger scent trail also you have the chance to use different baits on each hook. When using scratching rigs its always a good idea to scale down on hook size. Some anglers also use scratching rigs to catch the smaller species such as pouting, place, flounder and school bass by dropping down to even smaller hooks. Size 2 or 3 is a good option when using scratching rigs. Another useful tip is to use a plain lead and let it roll around, It will naturally find the holes and gullies that will be holding the fish, that will improve your chances of a catching more.
