Fishing at moel y don on the menai strights for some bass

Bass at Moel y don

Fishing at Moel y Don on the scenic Menai Strait for bass is always an exciting adventure. This particular session, captured by a dedicated North Wales angler, showcased the effectiveness of using peeler crab as bait. The catch came right on low water, which is the ideal time to fish this spot. The tidal flow here is notoriously strong, with hard and fast currents making fishing at other times challenging. It’s crucial to choose your tide and time carefully to make the most of this productive mark.

At Moel y Don, the conditions demand a bit of strategy and preparation. Low water provides the perfect opportunity for targeting bass, as the tide slows down and the fish move in closer to feed. While ragworm can often tempt bass here and is a reliable alternative, peeler crab or soft-back crab remains the bait of choice for most anglers. The scent and presentation of crab prove irresistible to the bass patrolling these waters. Whether fishing on a calm day or dealing with the occasional breeze sweeping across the strait, having the right bait can make all the difference.

Unfortunately, during this session, the fish couldn’t be returned. Pennel rigs, while excellent for improving hook-up rates, can sometimes make unhooking difficult, especially if the fish takes the bait deep. These rigs are often favored for their versatility and ability to present larger baits effectively, but they require careful handling to ensure the welfare of the catch. This instance highlights the importance of having tools like long-nose pliers or forceps on hand to safely remove hooks whenever possible.

Fishing Moel y Don is about more than just the catch—it’s an experience that connects you with nature and the unique beauty of the Menai Strait. The serene backdrop, with its tidal ebb and flow, is a constant reminder of the power of these waters. Whether you’re after a trophy bass or simply enjoying the challenge of fishing in such a dynamic environment, it’s a mark that rewards preparation, patience, and respect for the tides.
